I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar (J'entends plus la guitare, 1991) is Garrel's haunting tribute to his ten-year relationship with the iconic German chanteuse Nico. Johanna ter Steege (The Vanishing) plays the passionate, doomed lover of Benoit Regent (Three Colors: Blue).
Utilizing an elliptical style that’s alternately invigorating and maddening—Gérard goes from druggie to daddy in a single cut —Garrel’s eulogy is both a tribute and a pitiless autopsy of a couple’s self-destructive tango. The guitar he can no longer hear, however, isn’t just the late singer but the promises the past sweeps away.

In I Can No Longer Hear the Guitar, the characters falling in and out of love are based on the filmmaker himself (played by the late great actor Benoît Régent, whose face was one of the great reactive surfaces of the celluloid era) and Nico (Joanna Ter Steege, a human light source inside the frame), the Velvet Underground chanteuse with whom Garrel made several entrancing experimental films and shared a long and druggy romance.
