The production, set in early Roman times, follows the inner circle of the empire's most formidable foe, King Mithridates of Pontus. Maestro Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts the sterling cast, which includes tenor Gosta Winbergh and mezzo-soprano Ann Murray.

I was familiar with Mozart's opera from watching the Richard Croft production, which I loved. And I am also familiar with Jean Pierre Ponnelle, loving his opera films for Rigoletto, Le Nozze Di Figaro, La Cenerentola, La Clemenza Di Tito and Der Barbier Von Sevilla. In 1770, when he was 14, the young Mozart travelled with his father Leopold to Italy. With a commission from Count von Firmian, he threw himself into creating lyric works and composed Mitridate, his first opera seria, with a libretto by Vittorio Cigna-Santi, inspired by Racine’s eponymous tragedy.

During his journey through Italy, Mozart’s music is held in the highest esteem. At the age of 16, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart finally receives the commission for a great work: “Mitridate, Re di Ponto” premiers in 1770 in Milan.

Mozart wrote Mitridate while touring Italy in 1770. The musicologist Daniel E. Freeman has recently demonstrated that it was composed with close reference to the opera La Nitteti by Josef Mysliveček.
